How to Freeze or Pause Your Anytime Fitness Membership

Quick answer
To freeze or pause an Anytime Fitness membership, ask your home club in person or in writing. Anytime Fitness doesn’t list an online freeze option, and each club sets its own rules.

Most clubs charge a small monthly hold fee and push your contract end date back by the frozen time. Medical freezes, however, usually need a doctor’s note.

On this page, “freeze,” “pause,” “hold” and “suspend” all mean the same thing: stopping full dues for a while without ending your Anytime Fitness membership.

Can you freeze an Anytime Fitness membership?

Yes, at most clubs. The Anytime Fitness FAQ says to contact your home club about suspending a membership, because each location has its own policy.

As a result, the length, the fee and the paperwork change from gym to gym. Your membership agreement lists them, usually under Freeze, Hold or Suspension.

What a freeze usually costs and how long it lasts

Unfortunately, US clubs don’t publish a national freeze fee. The only printed numbers come from the Australian agreement, which is a useful benchmark for what to ask your club.

I couldn’t find a published freeze fee for US clubs, and I’d distrust any site that quotes one national number. Instead, ask for yours in writing.

How to pause Anytime Fitness membership for medical reasons

Medical holds are a common reason people pause. For instance, surgery, an injury or pregnancy can all qualify, and some clubs reduce or skip the hold fee for them.

First, bring a doctor’s note with the expected recovery time. In Australia, the agreement allows freezes past the normal 3-month limit when you have medical proof.

If you can’t train again at all, a medical cancellation may fit better. Australia’s agreement lets you cancel on medical grounds for an admin fee equal to 30 days of dues.

Freeze for travel, work or military service

Going away for only a few weeks? Then check whether you need a freeze at all. Your membership already works at 6,000+ Anytime Fitness clubs worldwide.

A two-week work trip to Chicago doesn’t need a freeze if there’s a club near your hotel. See whether your Anytime Fitness membership can be used anywhere first.

For a military deployment, by contrast, bring your orders. Many clubs freeze or cancel for service members, and some state health club laws cover it too.

Freeze or cancel, which costs less?

Freeze if you’re coming back within a few months. Cancel if you’re not sure you’ll return, because paying hold fees for a gym you never go back to is money wasted.

Next, use the quick check below. Enter your club’s hold fee and what rejoining would cost, including a new enrollment fee and key fob if they apply.

The check assumes month-to-month with one month of dues during the notice period. On a contract, add your buyout to the cancel side, which almost always makes freezing cheaper.

What happens during and after a freeze

During the freeze, your key fob stops working at every club, including clubs abroad. Personal training packages may pause too, so ask about them separately.

When the freeze ends, full dues restart on the date you agreed. Want to come back early? Ask your home club to end the hold, and confirm the new billing date in writing.

    Anytime Fitness freeze FAQ

Can I freeze my Anytime Fitness membership online or in the app?

Anytime Fitness doesn’t list a self-serve freeze online. Some clubs accept freeze requests by email, so send yours and wait for written confirmation.

Can I freeze during the first month?

Some clubs limit freezes in the first month or during a promo period. Check your agreement or ask before you sign if you know a trip is coming.

    Does freezing extend my contract?

Usually yes. The frozen months are added to the end of your term, so a 12-month contract with a 2-month freeze ends 14 months after you started.

Can I use other Anytime Fitness clubs while frozen?

No. A frozen membership doesn’t grant access to any club, and the Australian agreement ties reciprocal access to an active, unsuspended membership.

What if my club charges full dues while I’m frozen?

Contact the club with your written confirmation, then ABC Financial at 888-827-9262 if the charge isn’t fixed.
