Quick answer
Anytime Fitness has no single national cancellation policy. Each club’s membership agreement sets the rules, and the company’s own FAQ says so.
At most US clubs, month-to-month members give about 30 days’ notice and pay no fee. Contract members who leave early usually pay a buyout, commonly $75 to $200 or 50% or more of what’s left.
Anytime Fitness is a franchise, so the gym owner, not the Minnesota head office, writes the contract. As a result, two clubs in the same city can have different cancellation fees.

What is the Anytime Fitness membership cancellation policy?
In short, the Anytime Fitness cancellation policy is whatever your signed agreement says.
Anytime Fitness states that all cancellation terms, including termination fees, are listed in each member’s agreement.
Most US agreements share the same shape, though. There’s a notice period, a fee for leaving a contract early, and a list of reasons that can cut or cancel that fee.
| Policy item | Common US terms | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Notice period | About 30 days | “Cancellation” or “Termination” section |
| Month-to-month exit fee | Usually none | Same section |
| Contract buyout | $75 to $200, or 50% to 100% of remaining dues | “Early termination” clause |
| How to give notice | In person or certified mail to home club | “Notices” clause |
| Fee waivers | Relocation, medical, military, club closure | Exceptions or state law notice |
Anytime Fitness membership cancellation fee
What you owe depends on your plan and how far into it you are. The fee is rarely a surprise if you read the agreement first, and very often a surprise if you don’t.
Month-to-month members
First, month-to-month plans usually carry no cancellation fee. You still pay dues through the notice period, so a 30-day notice can mean one more full monthly charge.
Contract members leaving early
However, leaving a 12 or 24-month contract early triggers the buyout. Reported US fees run from about $75 to $200, and some agreements charge 50% to 100% of the remaining balance.
For example, here’s how a percentage buyout plays out on a $45 monthly plan. The numbers are an example, so plug in your own dues and months left.
| Months left on contract | Remaining dues at $45 | 50% buyout | 100% buyout |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 months | $405 | $202.50 | $405 |
| 6 months | $270 | $135 | $270 |
| 3 months | $135 | $67.50 | $135 |
Now look at the 3-month row. With only a few months left, it’s often cheaper to finish the term, or freeze it, than to pay a buyout plus notice-period dues.

After the contract term ends
Once the minimum term is over, however, most agreements roll into month-to-month. From then on you only give notice, with no buyout, so check your start date before you pay one.
When Anytime Fitness may waive the cancellation fee
Most agreements under the Anytime Fitness cancellation policy, and many state health club laws, allow a cheaper exit for certain life events. You’ll need proof, so gather paperwork before you ask.
- Moving away, often 25 miles or more from any club, with a new lease or utility bill
- A medical condition that stops you training, backed by a doctor’s note
- Military deployment or a permanent change of station, with orders
- Your club closing without a nearby club taking over the membership
- The member’s death, handled by family with a certificate
Before assuming you must cancel after a move, remember memberships transfer. In fact, Anytime Fitness says you can switch to a club over 10 miles away with no transfer fee.
Cooling-off period after you sign
Many US states give a short window to cancel a new health club contract for a full refund, often 3 to 5 business days. Your agreement should also print the exact deadline.
Australia’s version of the Anytime Fitness cancellation policy is clearer. You get 7 days from the start date to cancel in writing, with joining and membership fees refunded but not the fob fee.
Anytime Fitness cancellation policy in Australia
In contrast, the Australian agreement spells out numbers the US contracts leave to each club. Cancelling inside the minimum term costs the higher of 50% of what’s left or 30 days of fees.
After the term, you give 30 days’ written notice, or 14 days in the ACT. Medical exits, meanwhile, need a doctor’s letter and an admin fee equal to 30 days of dues.
A move of more than 15 km from every club also qualifies, with 30 days’ notice and proof of address. Our country price guide covers Australian fees in full.
How to check your club’s exact cancellation policy
You don’t need to guess, because the Anytime Fitness cancellation policy for your club is in writing. Your agreement already has the answer, and this takes about 10 minutes if you have the paperwork.
- Get your agreementSearch your email for the signup confirmation, or ask your home club to email a copy of your agreement.
- Find the cancellation sectionLook for headings like Cancellation, Termination or Early Termination.
- Note your start date and termWrite down when the contract began and how many months it runs.
- Work out the feeApply the buyout rule to your remaining months, then add dues for the notice period.
- Check the exceptionsSee whether relocation, medical or military reasons reduce the fee, and what proof they need.
- Confirm with the clubAsk the club to confirm your final amount in writing before you hand in notice.
Mistakes that make cancelling cost more
Most cancellation complaints online come from the same three or four errors, and each one is easy to avoid once you know about it.
For example, giving notice a day after the billing date can add a whole extra month. Send it at least a few days before your next charge.
Also, stopping the bank payment doesn’t end the contract. Unpaid dues keep building and can reach collections, which hurts more than the original buyout would have.
Cancelling at the wrong club goes nowhere, because only your home club holds your agreement. The full process sits in our guide on how to cancel an Anytime Fitness membership.
Anytime Fitness cancellation policy FAQ
Is there a cancellation fee on a month-to-month membership?
Usually no. You pay dues during the notice period, and some clubs charge a small processing fee, so check the agreement to be sure.
Do I still pay the annual fee if I cancel?
If the annual fee bills during your notice period, most agreements say you pay it. Give notice early enough that your end date falls before it.
Can Anytime Fitness send my account to collections?
Yes. If dues or a buyout go unpaid, the club or its billing company can pass the debt to a collection agency.
Can I cancel during the free pass?
A free pass isn’t a membership, so there’s nothing to cancel. It simply ends after its 1 or 7 days.
Can a club change its cancellation policy after I sign?
The terms in your signed agreement apply to you. A new policy for new members doesn’t normally rewrite a contract you already signed.
